Monica Ell Kanayuk

Mrs. Monica Ell-Kanayuk was elected as President for the Inuit Circumpolar Council (Canada) in July 2018 at the 13th General Assembly in Utqiaġvik, AK. In 2011 she won the by-election of the 3rd Assembly, Mrs. EllKanayuk served as Minister of Family Services, Minister responsible for Homelessness, Minister responsible for the Qulliq Energy Corporation and Minister responsible for the Status of Women.

Monica Ell-Kanayuk was then re-elected in the general election held October 28th, 2013 to represent a new constituency of Iqaluit-Manirajak in the 4th Assembly of Nunavut. Mrs. Ell-Kanayuk was elected to serve on executive council during the November 15th, 2013 proceedings of the Nunavut Leadership Forum. Mrs. EllKanayuk held several high profile positions such as Minister of Health, Minister of Economic Development and Transportation, including that of Deputy Premier.

Monica Ell-Kanayuk has previously worked as the Director of Programming for Inuit Broadcasting Corporation. She has held various positions with Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, including Director – Business and Economic Development. Prior to this, Ms. Ell-Kanayuk worked for 18 years at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, including that of senior reporter.

Ms. Ell-Kanayuk has also owned and operated her own small business called Arctic Creations for 8 years where she employed over a dozen Inuit women to work full time and at home to sew projects for sale at her retail store. In 1996, her business received an award from the Baffin Chamber of Commerce called “Business of the Year Award”.

She has served on a number of boards, including the Nunavut Economic Forum, Baffin Regional Chamber of Commerce, Pauktutiit Inuit Women’s Association, and Atuqtuarvik Corporation. She currently holds a board member seat with the Nunavut Business Credit Corporation.
